Why Does My Throat Hurt On One Side?
The symptoms of throat pain are not very common. Most people don’t notice it at all. However, if you have ever suffered from throat pain then you might know that your throat feels like its burning up or cracking when you speak. This condition is called acute otitis media (AOM). You may experience AOM even without any other symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, runny nose etc. However, if you suffer from cold symptoms such as headache, sore throat or coughing up blood then you need to seek medical attention immediately.
What Causes Acute Otitis Media?
Acute otitis media (AOM) is caused by bacteria in the airways. These bacteria cause inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the mouth and throat. They produce a thick white substance which causes the symptoms of AOM. Some of these bacteria include Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Haemophilus influenzae type b. Other types of bacteria can cause AOM but they do not cause as much damage to the body.
How Do I Know If I Have Acute Otitis Media?
If you are experiencing painful ear aches, hearing loss or fever you should see a doctor immediately. These could be signs of serious AOM and you need medical attention immediately. The hearing loss is a very serious condition that can cause permanent damage.
What Can I Do To Treat Acute Otitis Media?
There are many ways to treat AOM. The most common way is to take an antibiotic in pill or liquid form. It is important not to stop taking it until it’s all gone. You should also take the medication as prescribed by your physician. You should also try to get as much sleep as you can. Drinking enough water and resting will help your body recover from the bacteria.
What Are The Possible Complications Of Acute Otitis Media?
If you have AOM and fail to get treatment for it, it can lead to several complications. This disease can cause hearing loss and permanent disfigurement of the ear drum. The most severe complication is mastoiditis. It occurs when the infection spreads into the bone around the ear. If not treated it can spread to other parts of your body such as the brain or heart.
How Can I Prevent Getting Acute Otitis Media?
There are some simple measures which you can take to prevent getting AOM:
1. Get your child immunized against Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
2. Don’t smoke and always avoid second hand smoke.
This will decrease the risk of developing lung problems in children.
3. If you have a child, make sure that they are up to date with all their vaccinations, including those for tetnus, diphtheria and whooping cough.
