What Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Exercises Relieve Pain?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ), or the jaw bone between your upper teeth and your lower jaw, is one of the most common joints in our body. It’s located at the top of your skull near where your brain would be if it was on a stick. The TMJ plays an important role in preventing injury from falling objects when chewing food. If you have a bad bite, you may get hurt if trying to chew something hard like a pencil.

The TMJ helps keep your jaw stable so that you don’t fall over while eating. Your teeth need to move freely in order for your mouth to open and close properly. When they aren’t moving freely, the teeth are not able to open fully and close completely allowing food into your mouth.

If the muscles around your jaw aren’t strong enough to prevent your teeth from moving, then you could develop a bad bite. A bad bite means that you’ll be unable to eat properly and will suffer from tooth decay later in life.

There are many types of TMJ exercises out there. Some people prefer to do them regularly while others just want to learn how to do them themselves. You can choose which type works best for you.

One type of exercise that is popular among teenagers involves the use of a tennis ball. These are very easy to find and can usually be bought from your local store or purchased online.

Find a hard floor and lay down on your back with your legs straight out in front of you and your arms at your side. Make sure you keep your knees and elbows locked so that you don’t hurt yourself. Your head should also be kept straight to avoid any injury as well.

Now gently place the tennis ball under your cheek bone on one side of your face. Your partner should now gently tilt your head towards them and back again repeatedly. Do this for around 15 times, place the ball under the opposite cheek, and do it again for 15 times as well.

The second exercise that people like to do is called the jaw wrench. These are very easy to get if you don’t have one at home already. If you do, then you can skip this part.

They are also fairly cheap to buy and can be found at most drug stores.

To start this exercise, you will gently open and close your mouth with the wrench inside. Do this for around 15 times and then move on to the next step which is placing the wrench on either side of your head. Slowly open and close your mouth ten times and then finally place the wrench below your chin and do it again for around ten more times.

These exercises can be a bit strange and you may feel silly doing them in front of others. However, they are very important when it comes to how your teeth line up and how strong your jaw muscles are. If you don’t feel like doing these exercises then you should consider getting a mouth guard for protection.

It’s a bit on the extreme side, but it is effective at preventing tooth decay and muscle pain. They are usually sold at drug stores and sports related shops. If you plan on doing a lot of physical activity, then you should consider buying one of these as they will increase the strength of your jaw muscles and prevent any pain or difficulties when eating food.

Make sure that you are chewing your food properly because this will help reduce the amount of acid produced when eating food with carbohydrates or sugars in them. This can help prevent tooth decay and also give you enough time to properly clean your teeth afterwards.

A good tip is to try and avoid acidic and sugary drinks as much as possible. If you do insist on having them then try to drink them through a straw to avoid contact with your teeth. You could also try adding some mint or herbs to these drinks to help freshen the breath and leave your mouth smelling better for longer.

Water is always a good choice when it comes to hydration and it will help keep your teeth free from plaque build up. Some others drinks that you should try to avoid are alcohol, as this helps deteriorate your gums and leaves you more susceptible to getting cavities, and also milk, as the sugars present in it will have the same effect.

With proper diet and exercise you can prevent tooth decay and periodontal disease from developing. This will not only keep your mouth and teeth healthy, it will also help prevent you from getting sick as well.
