Allergy is one of the most common health problems today. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), over 2 million Americans are affected with allergic rhinitis or asthma. These two conditions affect millions of people worldwide.

The number of people suffering from allergy is increasing at an alarming rate. This condition affects the respiratory system and causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, swelling of the throat and chest pains. There are many reasons why someone might develop allergies: environmental factors like dust mites in the house; genetic predisposition; stressors like poor diet or even smoking.

There are several things that can cause allergies, but they all have one thing in common: exposure to allergens. For example, pollen may trigger allergic reactions when inhaled. Other potential triggers include foods that contain peanuts or tree nuts (peanuts being the most common) and animals such as dogs and cats.

People with hay fever can suffer from allergies due to contact with pollen or other airborne allergens.

It is important to remember that not everyone can be allergic to the same things. Even if one person has an allergy, it does not mean that everyone else will experience the same allergic reaction. Even with the same allergen, two different people may have very different reactions to it.

This is because the immune system of each person is unique in itself.

If you think you might have an allergy, the first thing you should do is see a doctor and get tested for it. This can be done by taking a blood or skin test. A change in diet or lifestyle may help relieve some of your allergic reactions.

If this doesn’t work, or if the allergy is serious, you may need to get medication to quell your reactions.

Some of the most common allergies today are food allergies. Even something as seemingly harmless as milk can cause reactions in some people. There are different types of food allergies, each with their own symptoms and severity.

Let’s take a look at the most common types of food allergies:

Cow’s Milk Allergy

Cow’s milk is just one of many foods that can cause an allergic reaction in some people. This is usually the first food allergy encountered by infants and young children. Many babies are able to consume cow’s milk without any problems.

When the body is unable to process milk and other dairy, it will mount an immune response. The immune system releases histamine or a similar chemical in order to attack the allergen.

This causes the symptoms of a food allergy: rashes, swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, wheezing and even loss of consciousness in some cases. The severity and type of reaction that a person has will vary from person to person.

Although the body is able to tolerate small amounts of cow’s milk without a reaction, large quantities of it may cause an allergic reaction. Even trace amounts in processed foods may be enough to trigger an allergic reaction in a sensitive individual. In most cases, the body becomes immune to small amounts of cow’s milk after some time.

Symptoms of a cow’s milk allergy include: skin rashes, hives, swelling of the lips, tongue and throat, vomiting, itchy eyes, sneezing and coughing. In severe cases, anaphylactic shock may occur. This is more common in children than adults.

Egg Allergy

The next most common food allergen is eggs. Just like cow’s milk, the body may be able to tolerate small quantities of egg without any complications. Large quantities of egg or even trace amounts in certain foods may trigger a negative reaction in some people.

Egg allergies can cause milder symptoms than other food allergies. It is possible for a person to have anaphylactic shock from an egg allergy, but this is relatively rare. Most cases of anaphylactic shock are related to other food allergens.

The most common symptoms of an egg allergy are: hives, swelling, vomiting, diarrhea and itchy skin. In some cases, the worst symptoms are caused by inhalation of the egg proteins. When cooked or raw eggs are thrown into hot grease, the fumes may cause a person to become dizzy or even lose consciousness.

This is fairly rare and most often occurs in industrial kitchens where large quantities of eggs are used.

Although most people are able to consume small quantities of eggs without any problems, it is possible for a person to have a very serious reaction to even a single bite of an egg-containing product. The severity of the reaction can be determined by the size of the bite, how sensitive the person is and the amount of the allergen consumed.

The last common food allergen is peanut. It is one of the most severe food allergies and can be life-threatening.
