How to Tell If Cannabis Is Past Its Prime

Cannabis is one of the most popular recreational drugs worldwide. There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding its effects and dangers. Some of these include:

1) Marijuana causes mental retardation.

2) Marijuana makes you stupid or impulsive.

3) You cannot drive after using marijuana.

4) Smoking marijuana will make you lose your job because it interferes with work performance.

5) Marijuana causes cancer.

6) Marijuana is addictive.

These are just some of the common myths that have been perpetuated over the years. However, there is no scientific evidence to support any of them!

What do you think? Do you believe these myths? Are they true?

What is Cannabis?

The word cannabis comes from the Latin words cannabīre (meaning “to smoke”) and bāter (meaning “flower”). The plant itself is called Cannabis sativa, which means “Indian Hemp”. It grows wild throughout India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and parts of Africa. It was originally used medicinally but nowadays it’s mainly grown for its fiber and seeds. The reason why it has been illegal for so long is that, like alcohol, it was once believed to cause people to become violent. There are three main reasons for this:

1) It was used medicinally by Native Americans

2) It was popular with black and hispanic musicians

3) The authorities used the drug war to oppress people

The first two reasons are untrue because marijuana does not cause violence, and actually acts as a sedative in low enough doses. (In high doses it can cause feelings of fear and anxiety, but this is true of most drugs) The third reason for marijuana being illegal is probably the most common reason that drugs are made illegal.

It is to oppress a particular group of people. Back in the day, smoking marijuana was believed to make white women have interracial relationships, which was (and still is) frowned upon in America.

Does Cannabis Make You Stupid?

As I mentioned above, if taken in excess, cannabis can make people feel anxious or paranoid. However, this is also true of alcohol, and yet alcohol is legal. There is simply no evidence to support the claim that smoking marijuana makes people stupid. In fact, quite the opposite is true. The famous psychologist Carl Sagan once said:

Prohibition ends in failure…We tried that experiment with Alcohol…It caused a roaring underground market…and made criminals rich.
