What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are plant extracts or natural substances which have been used medicinally for centuries. They may contain volatile compounds such as alcohols, acids, alkaloids, terpenes and other chemicals. Some of these compounds act as anti-inflammatory agents (1). Others may provide analgesic properties (2) and others still may possess antibacterial activity (3).
They have many uses in medicine and health care. For example, they have been used to treat burns, insect bites, poison ivy, rashes and wounds (4), as well as infections (5).
They are also known to reduce pain (6) and stimulate the immune system (7). They are often added to foods for their medicinal qualities.
The most common use of essential oils is in perfumes. There are hundreds of different types of essential oils available today.
Some of them are used in cosmetics, some of them are used for food preparation, some of them are used for homeopathy and others still are not yet researched enough to make any conclusions.
There is no doubt that essential oils have therapeutic effects on the human body. However, there is also a growing number of studies showing that they may cause cancer (8).

What are the Different Types of Oils Used for Skin Treatment?
