Activated charcoal is also commonly used in water filters since it can help trap potentially dangerous chemicals and impurities. By effectively trapping these things, your water will be purified to the point that it should be safe to drink.
However, you may want to still seek out bottled water for a period of time until the authorities are able to confirm that the water is safe for consumption in your area.
