What Is Shivering Pilaris?

Shivering pilaris is a type of herpes virus which causes shingles. It usually occurs when there is contact with cold weather or during exposure to sunlight. There are two types of shingles; primary and secondary. Primary shingles affects the central nervous system while secondary forms secondary infections such as pneumonia, meningoencephalitis, encephalomyelitis and others. Secondary infections can cause death if not treated properly. The virus can be spread through skin contact with an infected person or by direct contact with the blisters and sores that are caused by the herpes virus. The virus can also be spread through air, on towels, washcloths, clothing and even by kissing an infected person.

What to Do When You Suffer Shingles?

1) Get an injection.

If you think that you have shingles, then the first thing that you should do is to see your doctor immediately. If you are diagnosed with shingles, your doctor will recommend an injection of pain medication. This injection is given to relieve the pain and burning that comes with shingles.

The doctor will also recommend a pain medication that can be taken internally.

2) Take antiviral medication.

Shingles is caused by the herpes virus hence it can be treated with medication that is specifically manufactured to treat the virus. The medication will suppress the symptoms and can cure shingles within 2-3 weeks.

3) Use pain medication.

While you are taking antiviral medication, you can also apply topical ointments and creams to reduce itchiness and pain caused by shingles.

4) Drink a lot of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Shingles causes fever, chills, headaches and other symptoms that can cause dehydration if not treated immediately. You can prevent dehydration by eating and drinking a lot to avoid weakness and other complications.

5) Apply cool washcloths on the affected area.

This will provide relief from burning and itching.

6) Get lots of rest.

During this period you should avoid any type of physical activity to allow your body to recover.

7) Take care of yourself.

During this period you cannot do your routine activities. You should ask someone to help you with chores at home.

With all these in mind, it is important that you seek medical attention immediately if you think that you have shingles. Shingles can be dangerous hence you should not waste time taking medication and getting yourself treated in order to avoid serious complications.
