Acetylcholine Supplements: Benefits, Side Effects, and Types

The brain is one of the most complex organs in our body. It controls many functions such as memory, attention span, coordination and much more. One of the major roles of the brain is to transmit signals from one part of your body to another (brain waves). These are called “auditory” or “visual” signals.

There are two types of neurons in the human brain: excitatory and inhibitory. Acetylcholine is also known by another name – learning transmitter. This is because it has a positive impact on your ability to learn new things. It ensures that all signals that come into your brain get a stronger or weaker signal depending on the situation.

Unfortunately, with age, the amount of Acetylcholine in your brain reduces. The University of California has stated that as you get older, the production of this substance decreases. This is very important because this means that the signals do not reach their destination as quickly or at all. This can lead to problems with short-term memory loss and Alzheimers disease.

Fortunately, this is the part where nootropics come into play. One of the best known nootropics that affect the acetylcholine levels in your brain is called huperzine-A. This substance is chemically similar to acetylcholine and works by blocking its transmission to the nerves. By doing so, it strengthens the impulse, making sure that all signals are received correctly by your brain.

This is one of the safest nootropics available on the market. The only side effects you are likely to experience are nausea and dizziness. These effects rarely occur, and if they do, they can be avoided by taking a lower dosage. It is also highly recommended that you take it with a choline supplement (such as Alpha GPC or Citicoline).

This is because huperzine-A increases the amount of acetylcholine in your brain, so if you do not take a choline supplement, there won’t be enough left for important nerve functions.

Most people start off with a dose of 0.2mg per day and increase it by 0.2mg every 3 days until they find the ideal dosage for themselves. It is recommended that you do not exceed a daily dose of 1mg.

A lot of people wonder if there are any side effects to using huperzine-A. Thankfully, there are very few. Common side effects are nausea, dizziness, and headaches. These side effects are usually pretty mild and most people find them to be manageable.

In addition, these symptoms disappear after you stop taking the supplement for a few days.
