Lysine is one of the most abundant amino acids found in nature. It is present in many plants and animals. Lysine plays an essential role in human metabolism. It helps maintain normal blood sugar levels, regulates protein synthesis and maintains nerve function. -L-Citrulline – Unlike arginine, citrulline is a nonessential amino acid. It is also a precursor to arginine and can be converted into it in the body.

While it does not increase blood flow as well as arginine, it has several other benefits. For one thing, it increases growth hormone secretion and reduces the amount of oxygen needed by exercising muscles. This may improve athletic performance. It also increases the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a source of immediate energy used by cells. At high dosages it has been shown to treat erectile dysfunction.

-L-Glutamine – Glutamine is another type of amino acid. It has been shown to prevent muscle breakdown during times of stress and exercise.

It also helps increase growth hormone levels, improves gut health and reduces allergic reactions among other things.

-L-Lysine – L-Lysine is an essential amino acid. It is one of the building blocks of proteins.

Like all amino acids, lysine is necessary to prevent muscle wasting and osteoporosis among other things.

-L-Methionine – Methionine is another type of amino acid which contains sulfur and plays an important role in protein synthesis. It also helps with liver function and with detoxification among other things.

Although it is an amino acid, it cannot be used to produce proteins. Instead, it can be turned into other substances, like cysteine and taurine, which are amino acids that can be used to produce proteins.

-L-Tryptophan – L-tryptophan is used in the treatment of insomnia, PMS, depression and also as a sleep aid. It has also been used in the treatment of migraine headaches, dysautonomia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Graves’ disease (thyroid disorder) and also to improve memory as well as to treat depression.

Tryptophan is also known to increase the risk of serotonin syndrome in combination with certain drugs. The risk is higher in people taking antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Other types of lysine supplements include BCAA supplements which contain a combination of branch chain amino acids (BCAAs). These are also essential amino acids.

Lysine and Arginine Together at a Glance

The exact mechanisms of how lysine and arginine together improve herpes are not fully understood. It’s best to also supplement with lysine and arginine together in order to achieve the best results.

L-lysine has been shown to be an effective treatment for cold sores as well as herpes simplex type I in general. Although not as effective as acyclovir (Zovirax), it’s cheaper, safer and causes less side effects.

Arginine also appears to be beneficial for treating cold sores and possibly the genital type of herpes caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2.

The best way to supplement with lysine and arginine is as a combination supplement called L-lysine with L-arginine. This combination has been researched the most for treating herpes.

The dosages used in studies have been fairly high, which may not be necessary for most people.

A dosage of 3 grams of lysine and 1 gram of L-arginine three times a day is what I would recommend. If you are obese, you may need a higher dosage.

People who are extremely overweight may need up to 6 grams of lysine and 2 grams of L-arginine three times a day.

It should be noted that arginine can cause blood pressure to drop very low in some people. If you are on prescription blood pressure medication, you should speak with your physician before supplementing with arginine.

It is best to spread your dosage out throughout the day. For example, you could take one gram with breakfast, another with lunch and another with dinner.
