Wound Dehiscence: When an Incision Reopens

The following are some of the most common types of wounds that require wound dehiscence surgery. These include:

1) Trauma – A penetrating injury such as gunshot or knife wound.

2) Burns – Any type of burn other than burns from hot liquids like gasoline or kerosene.

3) Insect bites – Bites from insects such as ants, bees, wasps, hornets and spiders.

4) Broken bones – Bones broken during falls or accidents.

5) Fractures – Bone fractures caused by trauma such as gunshots or blunt objects.

6) Infections – Viruses, bacteria and worms.

7) Poisoning – Drugs, alcohol or poisons.

8) Surgeries – Surgery wounds that have become infected.

9) Tissue death – Dead tissue due to lack of blood supply.

10) Unexplained – Any wound that doesn’t fall into any of the above categories.

The most common signs of wound dehiscence are pain, swelling and redness. It is common for patients to feel a “popping” sensation when the wound opens.

It is also common for some patients to experience fever, fatigue and chills when the wound opens.
