How to Treat Cervicalgia (Neck Pain)
Cervicalgia (neck pain) is one of the most common problems among women. It may affect any age group but is especially prevalent in young women between 15 and 30 years old. There are many reasons why cervicalgia occurs including: pelvic floor dysfunction, tight muscles around the spine, overactive bladder or prostate issues, pregnancy and other factors.
The neck area is a very sensitive part of the body and is vulnerable to injury from trauma such as falls, car accidents, sports injuries and even childbirth. Even minor cuts or scrapes on the neck area can cause severe pain.

Treatment of neck pain centers around resting, taking medications and applying heat or ice packs to reduce swelling and relieving pressure on the affected nerves. Heat therapy increases blood flow and swelling which can relieve some of the pressure on the nerves causing pain.
You should also apply ice packs after a few minutes of heat therapy to prevent the skin from overheating. Overheating of the skin can trigger a pain response as well so it is important to alternate heat and ice to manage pain.
There are many over-the-counter pain medications that you can use to reduce pain and inflammation. It is very important to speak with your physician before taking any medication since some drugs may interact with other conditions you may have or make them worse.
You should also consider seeing a physical therapist since they can help you manage your pain and teach you exercises to improve strength, flexibility and posture that will help prevent future pain.
A doctor can also provide safe and effective medical treatment that may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids or even surgery as a last resort. A physical therapist can also provide these services without the need for a doctor’s visit.
