Bone Spurs On Your Feet: What Are They?

Bone spurs are small growths or bumps on your feet caused by pressure from bones in the body. These bumps may appear anywhere along the length of your toes, but they most commonly occur near the ball of each foot (the big toe). Bone spurs form when one part of the skeleton grows faster than another part. When these two parts rub together, there is friction which causes a tiny crack to develop. The cracks then grow larger over time until they become large enough to cause pain.

The problem with bone spurs is that it’s very difficult to treat them without surgery. There are several treatments available, including heat therapy, ice packs, compression socks and injections. Some of these treatments require specialized equipment such as scalpels or lasers.

There are many ways to prevent bone spurs from forming on your feet. Here are some tips:

Wear socks made of cotton or wool. Cotton socks trap moisture and keep your skin dry. Wool socks keep your skin warm and reduce friction. Avoid wearing shoes with heels that have spikes at the bottom. If you do wear these types of shoes, make sure they don’t have sharp edges or protruding points like those found on flip flops or sandals.

Wear loose fitting clothing so that your feet aren’t trapped under layers of clothes.

If you already have bone spurs on your feet, here are some tips on how to treat them:

Wear shoes or sandals that have broad, flat straps or soles that evenly distribute your weight. This alleviates some of the pressure caused by the bone spur. Use over-the-counter pain relievers for temporary relief. These include: acetaminophen (i.e.

Tylenol), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e. aspirin, ibuprofen (i.e. Advil), or naproxen (i.e. Aleve). Avoid strenuous activities such as running, jogging, aerobics or weight training while you have bone spurs on your feet. Don’t stand for long periods of time. If you have to stand for long periods of time, try to mix it up with periods of walking or sitting. Apply ice packs or frozen vegetables to the affected area. Don’t apply heat as it can further irritate your bone spurs. Stretch your feet and ankles to relieve some of the tension caused by bone spurs.

How Are Bone Spurs Diagnosed?

Bone spurs are diagnosed via a physical examination where your doctor feels the bumps on your feet. A bone scan and x-ray are typically performed to rule out more serious causes of foot pain.

Can You Prevent Bone Spurs From Forming?

The best way to prevent bone spurs from forming is to wear comfortable, supportive shoes that have soft soles. If you have flat feet or fallen arches, then wearing arch supports is also a good idea. Avoid going barefoot as much as possible as this causes your feet to develop uneven pressure.
