Dexedrine vs. Adderall: Two Treatments for ADHD

Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a drug used for treating cough, cold and other respiratory problems. DXM is often prescribed for children with asthma or bronchitis. However, it may cause severe anxiety in adults and teenagers.

The reason why DXM causes such strong anxiety in some individuals is because it acts like a powerful stimulant at low doses but becomes sedative when taken at higher doses. This is similar to how amphetamines work.

What Is Dexedrine?

Dexedrine is a prescription medication used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is available under several brand names including Adderall, Vyvanse and Ritalin. Dexedrine works by increasing the amount of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine increases feelings of energy and motivation. When taken regularly, it helps improve concentration and learning abilities.

When taken as prescribed, it is safe and effective for treating ADHD in children and adults.

Common side effects of Dexedrine include headaches, anxiety and sleep problems. Severe side effects may include decreased appetite and increased heart rate.

Never take more than the recommended dose and never share your medication with anybody else.

Is Dexedrine Stronger Than Adderall?

While Adderall contains a mixture of four different amphetamine salts (75% dextroamphetamine and 25% levoamphetamine), Dexedrine contains only the active dextroamphetamine salt (75%) and does not contain any levoamphetamine. Because of this, some people believe that the dextroamphetamine salt in Dexedrine is stronger than that found in Adderall.

However, research has shown that the levoamphetamine in Adderall actually counteracts the CNS stimulation caused by the dextroamphetamine, which is why the overall effect of Adderall is a reduction in stimulation.

Overall, the levoamphetamine in Adderall tends to blunt some of the side effects caused by the dextroamphetamine. For this reason, not everyone experiences the same effects when taking these drugs.
